This week’s episode will follow a different layout than our normal intelligence espresso episodes. As we are sure our listeners have seen, in the past week a war has broken out between Israel and Hamas with more than 3,000 estimated deaths on both sides. In this episode we will cover a brief explanation of the declining situation in Gaza since 2007, including the escalating Israeli aggression and the role of Hamas in the conflict. We will then discuss the events that took place on the 7th of October 2023, which saw Hamas carry out a highly coordinated and sophisticated land, sea and air assault on Israel which killed at least 1,300 people in one day alone.
We will then examine the topic on everyone’s minds: just how was this allowed to happen? How did Israel, a state with one of the strongest and most sophisticated intelligence services in the world, get taken by surprise? Lastly, we will discuss the tragic events and escalating aggression that have come as a result of the attacks.

The Israeli intelligence service was taken by complete surprise leaving officials, researchers and scholars to speculate and contribute this intelligence failure to a myriad of reasons.
The fallout of the attacks: bombings in Israel and Gaza, hostages, a blockade and possible war crimes, a mass evacuation of 1.1 million people and an estimated death toll of over 3,000.
